The Village Painters • 1940s to 1980s

The Village Painters formed in 1949 by women painter friends who had taken classes at Birmingham Southern College and were interested in continuing their art studies by painting together.  Their first studio was in the gymnasium at Birmingham Southern College where they received instruction and critique from art professor Raymond McMahon.  Through the years, they invited renowned artists and professors of art to mentor them and provide critique and instruction. Among their personal and collective arts activities, these early members supported the arts in Birmingham, fostering the growth of the Birmingham Art Association and the Birmingham Museum of Art.  They were also highly involved in the Festival of Arts and Art Education councils at the State level.

The first Village Painters Studio was in Mountain Brook Village. They have relocated several times to accommodate various needs, including a long-time studio space at Pepper Place.  They are now located at a spacious and convenient studio space at 614 Lorna Square, at the intersection of Lorna and Whiting Roads in Hoover.

Members of this small invitational painting group have studied art widely, are represented at local and other galleries, have exhibited at local and national juried art exhibits.  They are members of local and national art societiesand have paintings in numerous private and public collections.

Village Painter group exhibitions include Birmingham Southern College, Samford College, Birmingham Public Library, Little House, Lyda Rose. Members exhibit extensively as individual artists.
